Dinner Dance
Tickets for the dance are $40 and include a buffet dinner, soft drinks, beer and wine. A disc jockey will provide music for dancing and there will be a 50/50 raffle. Guests must be at least 18 to attend and must be 21 years old to drink beer or wine. Joe and Sandy Lopez will also provide line dancing lessons at the event. Organizers of the event said that the dance is typical of one James Volpe would have enjoyed.
James Volpe
On May 13, 2011, Volpe was a passenger in the rear seat of a 2004 Lincoln LS, driven by his baseball teammate, Alex Daniele. A second teammate, Christopher Russo, was also a passenger. Their vehicle was involved in an accident with another car driven by Robert Vallee, who was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with critical injuries. Russo and Daniele were transported to Community Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, but Volpe succumbed to his injuries. He was the second Jackson Memorial High School student to die in a month.
The James Volpe Foundation
After his death, family and friends created the James Volpe Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization, in order to honor his memory as a student, athlete, loving family member, devoted friend and role model. All who knew him said that Volpe was an amazing young man who was taken before his time. From the age of three, Volpe showed signs of promise as a baseball player. He was also academically talented, a strong-willed child who worked to the best of his abilities. The foundation strives to support young members of the community to help them reach their highest potential through scholarships and other financial support. The organization has raised more than $30,000 that has been used to provide scholarships, supply holiday gifts and food to less fortunate families while also paying for sports equipment for youth who could not afford the equipment otherwise. The organization also sponsors a Wiffle Ball Tournament and Family Fun Day in the spring as well as a golf outing in the fall. The foundation hopes to expand to other communities in the future.
