History of the VFW
Jackson VFW Post 4703 promotes the efforts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, an organization that began in 1899. The movement started in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania when veterans returning from the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the Philippine Insurrection from 1899 to 1902 banded together to secure rights and benefits for their service to the country. At the time, there were no veteran’s pensions or medical care for returning soldiers. In 1915, the organization had approximately 5,000 members but had grown to more than 200,000 by 1936. The VFW has been instrumental in establishing the Veteran’s Administration, creating a GI Bill, development of a national cemetery system and fought for compensation for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange. IN addition, the organization provides more than $3 million in college scholarships and fights for improved education for servicemen throughout the world.
