So let’s talk about some of the set back’s for the Uber drivers in New Jersey and why they’re urging others to not follow down the same path they’ve chosen to.
- Why it hurts to be an Uber driver in New Jersey.
More so, being an Uber means you’re personal vehicle will experience a mass amount of wear and tear that could lead to your vehicle breaking down and naturally you’ll be responsible for those costly repairs out of your own pocket as well. In the beginning drivers are told that because they make their own schedules and that it’s supposedly high in demand, Uber drivers are able to make a lot more money. Of course those who live in cities such as New Jersey would be under that belief as people are always in a hurry and need to go somewhere.
However, many Uber drivers in New Jersey have reported of not getting much in the way of fare’s or even people requesting the service in general. Essentially drivers are getting ticketed for doing a job they were once convinced by the company was legal and otherwise are finding it’s illegally operated. Drivers are furthermore being told they’re not allowed to accept tips unlike taxi drivers who are not only being paid from fares, but tips as well.
Once Uber takes their fees and you pay out all the other things they dock you with, Uber leaves drivers with next to nothing. No matter the distance you’re stuck traveling you still get paid the maximum rate of just over three dollars per person after fees and other things are taken out. This is a great job for someone who is looking for a little loose and spare change then it’s not such a bad job, but it’s definitely not one that you’ll find yourself making a living at.
In some ways it seems almost strange that for a business that is supposedly doing so well that they don’t have enough drivers. This is because of all the things that go with it. New Jersey in particular seemed to be a great location to choose to be an Uber driver, but that’s because Uber had convinced drivers they would have plenty of work and hours to stay busy and earn great money. Had Uber really told it’s employee’s the truth they’d have learned a few key items that might have swayed their opinion and choices on becoming a driver or not.
- What could have swayed potential driver’s minds?
The hours can be long and even with these hours the payout is not even close to what you need to be able to pay your bills. In the event of an accident in almost every case the company will not cover even half of the costs because the service you’re choosing to work for isn’t considered a taxi service. Different rules and laws apply which means that should you get hurt or even those who you are driving around, this too will typically cost out of pocket for lack of coverage via the insurance company you go through. In some states the companies require you to buy additional coverage, which as you guessed once more, means the price is coming out of your pocket.
As you can tell, almost anything that is associated with the Uber driving service cost more money than you earn with the company. There are so many drivers already struggling to find work in New Jersey, but with the small amount of actual people using the app and service, this means that what little work that is being done by the mass amount of workers, are being taxed even harder by the Uber company due to the fines that they charge their drivers. This company is just not a good choice for anyone.
