Nearly 30,000 Customers
According to Jersey Central Power & Light, 30,000 customers were without power as of noon on Saturday. The electric provider had crews working on substation equipment on the mainland in Toms River and were hoping to have power restored as quickly as possible. Flooding was not what caused the by 8:15 AM, the outages had increased significantly. Heavy, blowing snow falling from trees appeared to be the biggest cause of the outages.
Vast Majority in Ocean County
Officials said that most of the outages were in Ocean County and that they expected the number of outages to fluctuate as the storm continued. Crews were out working on the outages, but the company has a policy that buckets not be used when sustained winds reach 40 miles per hour. In some areas of Ocean County, winds reached those speeds and higher. Once the storm passes, officials said it restoration will move more quickly, but the weather was expected to continue at least through Sunday morning. Jersey Power & Light brought in additional crews that included lien, substation and forestry personnel.
Winter Storm Jonas
Many in the area felt that predictions for Winter Storm Jonas were overblown as weather forecasters began predicting severe weather before the storm arrived on the west coast of the United States. As early as Monday, January 18, 2016, forecasters predicted a “historic” snowfall for parts of the East, although the bulk of the snowfall was expected to fall in the Baltimore-Washington Metro area. The biggest concern with the storm along the coast was not the amount of snowfall, but the winds which were expected to gust to hurricane force. Winds of that magnitude can cause severe coastal flooding, which did happen in southern New Jersey, in areas like Cape May. Throughout the eastern part of the country, 37 people have died in the storm and travel restrictions were in place from North Carolina to Massachusetts. Airlines cancelled as many as 10,000 flights as well. There were reports of roof collapses and other major incidents related to the snowstorm as well.
