What are the changes?
We will breakdown the changes easily now. All drivers will have to take their vehicle to a private inspection station to get it re-inspected. Who will have to get re-inspected? Every vehicle that fails the emissions testing under rules changes (they will occur in June).
Another important change is the fact that the state will no longer pay for a second test given by private contractors at state inspection stations, but only if the motorist brings their vehicle back to be re-tested after flunking. Now these are important changes that you need to be informed about.
All specific changes that were published by the Motor Vehicle Commission are stated bellow:
- Only passenger-plated vehicles will be initially inspected at a Central Inspection Facility. You can find a list of the facilities nearest you at: Find a State-operated Inspection Station (Note: passenger-plated vehicles may continue to receive initial inspections at a Private Inspection Facility.)
- Any passenger vehicle that FAILS initial inspection will have to be re-inspected at a Private Inspection Facility. For a list of Private Inspection Facilities in your area, click here: Find a Private Inspection Facility
- All commercial vehicles currently requiring an inspection will now be inspected at the Private Inspection Facilities. Your vehicle may already be exempt. Please go to: FAQs- changes effective Aug. 1, 2010: emissions-only [pdf] to determine if your commercial vehicle requires an inspection and if it is exempted.
As for reasons behind this decision the spokesman stated that they are looking at cost-saving measures. As the inspecting older cars has become less essential, they decided to implement these changes.
Thoughts
Only older vehicles will basically be affected by these changes. There are small chances and are mostly dedicated to passenger-plated vehicles that will fail the inspection at the Central Inspection Facility. Prepare your vehicle to avoid this situation on the pay the additional fees at the private inspection facility.
One good tip we could give you is that If your vehicle fails for emissions violations, you must have the repairs completed by a registered Emissions Repair Facility (ERF), but you may make them yourself as well. Another important thing you should know is that If your vehicle fails inspection, you have up to one month from the last day of the month indicated on the inspection sticker to make repairs and return for re-inspection.
We think that this is no huge change and it will probably not affect the vehicle owner’s that much. Let us know your thoughts bellow. Are these minor changes? Were they needed and will they be effective?
