Day of Dance
The goal of the program is to raise awareness about cardiac disease, especially in women. The event provides those who attend an opportunity to learn and understand their own personal risks in order to prevent heart attack and stroke. Day of Dance celebrates dancing as a way to keep moving and stay heart healthy. Community dance groups perform throughout the day and visitors are encouraged to join in. Those who participate learn basic dance steps that promote heart health and may also receive free blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings. Professionals will be on hand to provide cardiac risk assessments and other information on heart health. Barnabas Health cardiac services will also be available. The event is free and there is no registration required.
Community and Physician Awareness
The main goal of Day of Dance is to build community and physician awareness about gender disparities when it comes to cardiovascular care. The program also hopes to improve detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women as well as throughout families in the community. Although the program is geared toward identifying cardiac risk in women, men are also welcome to participate in order to improve their cardiac health as well.
Number One Killers
Heart disease and stroke are the number one killers of American adults, taking more lives than cancer each year. February has been designated as “American Heart Month” since 1963 after being passed by Congress. Throughout the month, the public is educated on the dangers of heart disease and why a heart-healthy lifestyle is important. Community Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center plan to offer many heart health education programs throughout the month. In addition, each hospital will be lit red in a promotion known as “Glow Red” that is designed to promote the awareness of heart disease among women. The two hospitals hope that events such as Day of Dance, Glow Red and the other programs planned throughout the month will create a healthier Ocean County.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost 787,000 people died of heart disease in 2011. Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing 380,000 people each year. In the United States, someone dies of a heart attack every 34 seconds and, every 60 seconds, someone dies of a heart disease-related event. In women, heart disease is the top killer, yet only 20 percent of women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. Symptoms of heart disease can be different in men than women.
