Reconstruction Of New Jersey's Greatest Attractions:
It is clear that a number of the renovations and attention was given to revamping all the tourist attraction in many of the New Jersey townships from Toms River to Seaside Heights. These areas give the appearance that order is restored and in these areas for some that may very well be the case.
Long Beach Township (LBI) has seen a major uplift since the devastation of Superstorm Sandy hit the small community three years ago. A new boardwalk is in place with concrete reinforcements. Condominiums, co ops and new small business line the boardwalks. This has been a major relief to some who view the shore line scenery as the heart of the township.
The Long Beach Island area was one of the hardest hit areas on the Jersey Shore. Roads were left covered in feet of sands, trees were thrown about completely uprooted, boats were dispersed around the neighborhoods and the homes suffered severe damage from flooding and debris. An incomplete beach restoration projects has been a slow moving project since many of the beach front property owners have not been cooperating in the efforts to complete the work that needs to be done. There has been a considerable amount of rebuilding taking place in the Long Beach Township area, bungalows have been rebuilt or replaced by two story homes. In August of 2015 the Long Beach Island area finally got an emergency care room that many residents are relieved about.
The Seaside Heights shore received two renovation one from the destruction of the Sandy hit and another rebuild due to a fire that occurred on the boardwalk in 2013. The Seaside Heights boardwalk opened a number of attractions that remind locals and tourist of how the boardwalk operated prior to the Sandy devastation. A new ferris wheel was put in place as well as a new roller coaster to replace the one that was left in the ocean waters. Shops, restaurants and hotels all welcome guest while little additions that are still being worked on. A new miniature golf course and go kart racing tracks are some of the most recent addition to the area.
Many of the other New Jersey Shoreline attractions have been rebuilt to almost full capacity. This was the main focus of all rebuilding efforts done as a false hope for resident that believed it would only be a matter of time before the rebuilding on the residential areas began with such enthusiasm. You can see a number of restored hotels up a running in these areas. Business are bringing in money and people have begun flocking once again to the Jersey Shore's from all over.
Three Years Later And Some Residents Are Still Without A Home:
The number of homes and building that suffered damage from the hit of Superstorm Sandy reaches well above 350,000 according to some sources. This number includes residential homes that suffered from flooding as well as rental homes that suffered from major damaged due to winds and debris. Three years after the storm has hit and many of these homeowners can still not return to their homes because of the extent of damage. The residence that have been and that are still dispersed due to this lack of urgent assistance began to camp out around the Statehouse in Trenton NJ in protest to mark the three year anniversary. These protesters consist of homeowners from a number of the New Jersey areas including Toms River, Seaside Heights and Long Beach Island.
Although some of the homes have been rebuilt and others are in the process of being rebuilt there are a number of homeowners fighting to get the work they need done to their homes. Many individuals hired contractors that complete the work but was not up to building standards and three years later these homeowners are now fighting for contractors to get the work done that they already paid for. Others are still waiting to get any assistance at all so they can begin the rebuilding process. With the three year anniversary on October 29th some homeowners are left with little optimism that they will be back in their homes for the holidays once again.
The Recovery Process Is Still Major Process Even Three Years After The Sandy Hit:
Many of the electrical and gas companies that supply many of the areas in New Jersey such as Toms River and Seaside Heights still need to make necessary adjustments to help prevent a catastrophe the one encountered as they did when Sandy hit. There are a number of storm resiliency projects that have yet to begin that would elevated major equipment, replace main pipe lines as well as sufficient and effective flood proofing substations.
Individuals who received money from New Jersey's Rebuilding Program had to sign an elevation contract. This was an agreement that the homeowners would raise their homes of a specified height depending on the area their home was located. This is where many families have run into a number of problems. Many of the contractors who were hired to these elevation have yet to complete the jobs leaving these homeowners still unable to enter their homes.
The destruction of the Superstorm Sandy may have occurred three years ago but many are still fighting through the devastation. Many are still without a home. Those who can move into their home are still left in temporary housing units because of ongoing battles with construction companies and lenders. It seems that this is an area that many are not talking about. The rest of the world sees the new boardwalks, shops and hotels up and running but they do not get to see what lies beyond that. There are still a number of projects on hold and reconstruction that needs to be made to ensure that another natural disaster will not leave the residents with such devastating outcomes.
