Right in the middle between New York and Philadelphia an hour and a half car drive from each city there is a town called Jackson in New Jersey. This town is home to one of the most incredible parks in the US; Six Flags Great Adventure.
The park opened in 1974 as The Enchanted Forest but was renamed Great Adventure, and at this time wasn’t part of the Six Flags corporation, it wasn’t until 1976 and was sold to Six Flags. Six Flags Great Adventure features the tallest and second fastest roller coaster in the world: Kingda Ka.
Kingda Ka is a steel accelerator roller coaster, not only it’s the world's tallest roller coaster, but it is also the world's second fastest roller coaster and was the second strata coaster ever built. Opened in 2005 this incredible ride was built by Stakotra, and has converted Jackson into a sort of Mecca for the roller coaster enthusiast community. Making people travel from all over the world to ride this incredible rollercoaster. Kingda Ka is themed as a mythical tiger, named for the 500 lb Golden Tabby Bengal tiger who lived in an adjacent exhibit before moving to the park's safari. This is also the reason why and this rollercoaster has a clear Nepalese style. While you are on line waiting to have the ride of your life you will be immersed in a bamboo jungle, the waiting line is thrilling just hearing the screams and the sound of the cars moving right next to you. A true humbling experience even for the most experienced riders.
The train is launched by a hydraulic motor capable of producing 20,800 peak horsepower (15.5 MW), to achieve an incredible launch speed to 128 miles per hour (206 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, the train climbs the main top hat tower, reaching a height of 456 feet (139 m) and spanning over a 3,118-foot-long (950 m) track by the end of the ride, that will result in the ride of a lifetime. This ride can’t operate even with the lightest rain because of the high speed and open nature of the trains.
“I am not one for heights! I watched multiple videos of Kingda Ka before attending Six Flags to try and calm myself that it is not bad at all. When pulling up to the parking lot I looked up and instantly everything changed! "Nope NOOOOOOPEEE I can’t do that" I started freaking out. I chickened out twice that day. Finally I was like I have to do this I want to be able to say I went on Kingda Ka. We got in line and within ten minutes we were climbing into our seats. My whole body tensed up of course I pulled the harness down. (One of my fears is about the harness not going down far enough) Thankfully Kingda Ka's harnesses go down nice and tight and I felt very secure. We then were sent out to be launched at 128 mph in 3 1/2 seconds. We inched back and like a rocket shot off and up the side before I knew it we were on top I took a quick look around and shrieked as we came spinning down. It was over so fast! I will admit I was shaking and a little in shock of how we made up and over that high without issue. I am really happy I went on because it was such an amazing experience. I have never been on a coaster similar to Ka and honestly I highly suggest giving it a go! Granted you are warned that there is always a possibility of a roll back but I think they have perfected it enough that it is rare for that situation!” - Tricia-Lyn Smith
