How to Register
In order to register a child for Kindergarten, parents should bring a completed registration packet that can be found online, an original birth certificate, two proofs of residency an immunization records that show the child has received all immunizations required to date. The birth certificate must have a raised seal. Items that are considered proof of residency include:
- Property tax bill
- Deed, lease or rental receipt that includes the property address
- Mortgage statement
- Contract of sale
Utility bills or digital driver’s license may only be used as the secondary form of residency only. Parents who enroll a student who is not a resident of the district could be penalized with pro-rated tuition and litigation charges.
Immunization Requirements
All students enrolled in Brick Township School District schools must be immunized. Their immunization records must show that the child has received:
- Four doses of the Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis, known as whooping cough, vaccine (DTaP)
- Three doses of the Polio vaccine
- Two doses of the Measles vaccine
- One dose of the Rubella vaccine
- One dose of the Mumps vaccine
- Three doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine
- One does of the Varicella vaccine, or proof that the child has had chicken pox
Although the MMR is preferred, a parent may provide laboratory results that show a child is immune from Measles, Mumps and Rubella in place of the second dose of the MMR vaccine. The child must also undergo a physical examination within one year of their entry into Kindergarten. The examination must be performed by a medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) or a certified nurse practitioner (CNP). The physical must indicate that the child is well and without restrictions. If there are restrictions, they must be clearly indicated on the physical. The doctor should also note any medications the child is required to take. Parents who wish to claim medical exemptions must provide a valid note from a doctor which must be renewed annually. Parents with religious objections must apply with the school district in order to have their request legally reviewed.
Benefits of Kindergarten
Kindergarten offers children many benefits as children learn the basics of subjects that will be taught as they enter elementary school. Kindergarten curriculum includes beginning reading skills, how to listen, how to speak in public and how to write their name. Basic math skills are also provided and begin the foundation for more advanced math such as algebra or geometry. Kindergarten also provides the foundation for art, social studies and science through fun learning activities that seem more like play than like school. It also teaches important socialization and team building skills that children will carry throughout their education and into adulthood.
